Every winter is an invitation to retreat and live indoors. It’s time for reflection. The artworks of Uwe Poth, Jiun You Ou and Hartog & Henneman lend us a helping hand.

In the work of the artist duo Hartog & Henneman (Jiska Hartog 1977 | Michiel Henneman 1979, the Netherlands) everyday objects (of use) – in slightly different contexts and/or with a twist – play a central role. The ‘Are you Nuts’ collection, for example, is the result of an abundance of walnuts that literally fall on the duo’s doorstep every autumn. New characters just keep coming, each time slightly different, each nut with its own story and emotion. Since September 2021 also supported and enhanced by old family photos. A never-ending story? Are you nuts?

It’s hard to tell whether these beautifully wavy, gleaming, mesmerizingly clear stones from Jiun You Ou (1982 Taiwan) are an accidental find or endlessly cut and polished objects. According to Jiun You Ou, her quartz works are ‘liminal’ objects, pieces that are in the phase of a rite of passage, of which they are no longer attached to the ‘old’ but have not yet reached the ‘new’ stage either. Her objects are bright and dark, vulnerable and dangerous.

Uwe Poth (1946 Germany) lives and works in Nijmegen since 1979. His extensive and impressive body of work consists of countless series of drawings, hour-long paintings, visual magazines, paintings and much more. The work of Uwe Poth is characterized by the pastiche. In all his works of art, a multitude of fragments combine to form a new work. Sometimes these fragments are immediately recognizable, other times they remain hidden for a long time under the skin of paint, color or other technical veils. Uwe Poth invites us to discover his work, the present, our time, again and again and with different eyes.
