Everyday Awe
My first memory of awe, was being bundled outside to stare at the night sky and view Halley’s Comet passing by earth – 1984.
Recently I’ve been interested in research exploring the benefits of gazing in awe. When we experience awe inspiring landscapes or events (both positive and negative), we become less individualistic, more generous, reflective and feel a greater sense of connection to others and to our place in the wider world community. I experience this same sense of ‘Everyday Awe’ within the ebbs and flows of man made environments or cities.
A few years ago while exploring a small town in Europe, I entered an old building. The entrance formed with a large marble slab. As I walked through I noticed the stone had a deep worn dip, created by 800 years of feet coming and going. The perfect tension between the permanent and the fleeting. This is the feeling I aim to capture in my own work.
Currently this includes a series of hand built signs and jewellery pieces. Exploring and embracing low-fi industrial paint jobs, hurriedly scrawled mark making, interchangeable landscapes, kitsch cosmic aesthetics and beyond. Applying jewellery making techniques, I solder, rivet and construct forms using industry off-cuts, precious metals, stones and paint. The resulting objects rest somewhere along the borders of painting, or maybe vice versa.
At first glance an ‘empty’ sign may seem stuck in a kind of limbo, melancholic and lifeless. To me, they epitomise a space between just before and a moment after. A Waymark. Spaces where the past, present and future merge, something ineffable…a site of subtle awe.

„von der Kostbarkeit der Gegenwart“
At the beginning of my work, there is just a white sheet of paper, a pencil in my hand, moving gently across the paper – small traces, scratches and lines become visible.
I always go through this process at the beginning of my artistic work and at the end of a studio day.
Day after day, the form continues to evolve and frame the day – a surface and a form slowly build up and my mind becomes quiet. I linger in the moment and through the silence that sets in, I can get into the stone material and its requirements.
