by Moniek Schrijer
8 June until 27 July 2024
Moniek Schrijer is a jewellery artist from Aotearoa – New Zealand with direct ancestral connections to The Netherlands, Galerie Door is pleased to present her first solo exhibition within Europe.
Moniek began her jewellery studies in 2004 and graduated from Whitireia Polytechnic Faculty of Arts with a Bachelor of Applied Arts – Contemporary Jewellery in 2013; she has had a multitude of successes, including receiving a Herbert Hofmann prize in 2016, and recently presented a significant project; ‘A Hologram of a Diamond’ at the City Gallery (NZ) . Her work has been acquired by museum collections in France, Germany and Aotearoa.
For the exhibition GLOWWORM, Moniek leads us into the ngahere (forest) and ana (caves), exploring elements of our natural world. Cosmic transformations of light and dark take place with the use of glow-in-the-dark spheres; surfaces are embedded with light-reflecting and absorbing sources; stone, porcelain, cubic zirconia, shell and glass are placed alongside natural and engineered gemstones . To record the shift of time, decay and renewal, painterly, worn and engraved finishes replicate the colours and textures found in these ancient spaces of caves and forests. At the same time, the shapes of pendants and necklaces morph between the micro visages of larvae and worms to putiputi (flowers) and glowworm beetle backs.
Please join Moniek, who is travelling from Aotearoa to present GLOWWORM.
You are most welcome to join us at the festive opening on Saturday 8 June 2024 at Galerie Door in Mariaheide between 15 – 18 hrs!
